Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day's ceremony, though the title comes from unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve. The gift of Herbert A. French in 1947 brought the plate to the Library of Congress, and its catalog note warns of streaks and blemishes from the natural decay of the original emulsion, which is worth keeping in mind when judging its detail. The National Photo Company was a Washington studio that recorded much of the capital's public life in that era, so the plate offers a working record of a presidential transition on the eve of the Great Depression.
