Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that event under the title "Hoover Inauguration, 1929." The National Photo Company was a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed government officials, public ceremonies and city life for decades, so its negatives tend to capture the look of official Washington in the early twentieth century. Hoover, who had served as Secretary of Commerce under Presidents Harding and Coolidge, succeeded Calvin Coolidge and entered office just months before the stock market crash of October 1929. Note that the title comes from data written by the studio itself and has not been independently verified, and the glass shows some streaking from deterioration of its coating.
