Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day's ceremony in Washington. Its title comes from data the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, which the Library of Congress notes is unverified, so the caption should be read with that in mind. The plate is a 4 by 5 inch glass negative, the format press photographers and studios relied on in that era for sharp detail, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original coating. Those flaws are part of what the plate reveals about its age and handling.
