Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day's ceremony in Washington. The record offers little beyond its title, which comes from unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve, so the exact moment and crowd are uncertain. Hoover, a former Secretary of Commerce, succeeded Calvin Coolidge and was inaugurated just months before the stock market crash of October 1929. Glass plates like this one were the standard way press photographers captured such events, and the faint streaks on the surface are typical of deterioration in the original coatings.
