Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day's ceremonies, which were held on the East Portico of the U.S. Capitol. The company was a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed government events and public figures for decades, and its glass plates are valued for capturing the look of the capital in the early twentieth century. Visitors should note the surface streaks and blemishes on the plate, which come from the natural breakdown of its original coatings rather than from the photographer's work.
