Taken during Herbert Hoover's inauguration on March 4, 1929, this glass negative records the 31st president taking the oath on the Capitol's east portico, administered by Chief Justice William Howard Taft, himself a former president. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city and its public life for decades, and large glass plates like this one preserve fine detail in crowds and ceremony. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes on the plate, which come from natural deterioration of its original coating rather than from the scene itself.
