Herbert Hoover took the oath as the 31st president on March 4, 1929, succeeding Calvin Coolidge, and this glass negative records the occasion in Washington. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed the capital's public life in the early twentieth century, made the image, though its title rests on unverified information written on the negative or its sleeve. Viewers should expect streaks and other blemishes, which come from natural deterioration in the glass's original coatings.
