The record ties this glass negative to Herbert Hoover's inauguration in 1929, when he took the oath as the 31st president on March 4 at the U.S. Capitol. Chief Justice William Howard Taft, himself a former president, administered the oath, which gave the day an unusual symmetry. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the capital's public life, made the plate, and its surface shows the streaks and blemishes common to glass negatives whose coatings have deteriorated over time.
