Louis Moreau Gottschalk, the New Orleans-born pianist and composer, is the subject of this poster, which announces his farewell concerts in America. The bold color woodcut was a common, inexpensive way to advertise public performances in the 1860s, when printed posters were the main tool for drawing audiences. Gottschalk was a celebrated performer who drew on Creole and Caribbean melodies in pieces such as "Bamboula," and his American tours were followed closely by the press. The work was produced by the New York firm Clarry & Reilley, whose address appears on the sheet.
