An eight-week series of Wednesday evening concerts in New York, promising music from before Bach to the modern era, is the subject of this 1936 silkscreen poster. It was produced under the Work Projects Administration, and the Federal Music Project that sponsored it put unemployed musicians back to work during the Depression. The WPA's poster units used silkscreen to make inexpensive, bold announcements for public events, many of them for free or low-cost programs meant to reach audiences who could not normally attend concerts. The poster's promise of music spanning several centuries reflects the Federal Music Project's broader aim of widening access to repertoire beyond the standard concert fare.
