Taken east of Fort Gibson in Muskogee County in June 1939, this picture shows a white migrant family with their automobile, a familiar sight on Oklahoma roads during the years of drought and farm loss. Photographers working for the Farm Security Administration documented families like this across the Plains and Southwest, many of them traveling in search of farm work. The image survives as a 35 mm nitrate negative, a format that was widely used then but is fragile today. Its transfer by the Office of War Information in 1944 helped preserve it in the Library of Congress collection.
