Known in the Navy as the U.S.S. Gloucester, this vessel began life as a private steam yacht before the government bought it for war service in 1898, when the United States went to war with Spain. Under Commander Richard Wainwright, the converted ship took part in the fighting off Santiago de Cuba that July, where it helped destroy Spanish torpedo boats. The picture is a large 11 by 14 inch glass negative, probably made by Edward H. Hart for the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely recording American scenery and places. It is worth noticing as a record of a luxury yacht in its wartime role, not a battleship.
