The title of this 1868 lithograph quotes Ulysses S. Grant's short letter accepting the Republican presidential nomination that year, in which he wrote, "Let us have peace." The phrase became the core of his campaign, which presented the former Union general as the man who could heal a nation still scarred by the Civil War and the fight over Reconstruction. H. Muhr's image, drawn and printed as a lithograph with letterpress text, shows how campaign art of the period relied on one memorable line and a recognizable likeness to carry a candidate's message. Grant won the election that November and took office in 1869.
