Here the actress Adah Isaacs Menken stands in full length in a huntress costume, one of eight similar poses that the New York photographer Napoleon Sarony made of her, probably in the mid-1860s. Menken rose to fame on the American stage that decade, most famously in *Mazeppa*, a dramatization of Byron's poem in which the hero is bound to a galloping horse, a spectacle that drew both crowds and controversy. Studio portraits like this one were widely circulated in small card form, helping performers build public images that reached well beyond the theater. The date and attribution come from an old caption card, so they are worth reading with some caution.
