Taken from the top of McGraw Tower on the Cornell University campus in Ithaca, New York, this long gelatin silver print unrolls a full 360-degree view of the grounds and the surrounding countryside. The panorama was registered for copyright in July 1902 by Seth L. Sheldon, a photographer working in Ithaca, which places it in the early years of the twentieth century when panoramic prints were a popular way to show a campus from above. Cornell had been founded in 1865 and its buildings and landscape were still taking shape then, so the print offers a useful record of the layout of the university at that moment.
