Killary Harbour, the glacial fjord that Currier & Ives called "The Killeries," cuts between the mountains of Connemara on the western coast of Ireland, where the county of Galway meets Mayo. The firm, which was based in New York, issued many views of this kind, mostly scenic landscapes of Europe and the Americas, and sold them to a broad middle-class public that liked to hang pictures of distant places on the wall. This example is a hand-colored lithograph, so the tinting was added by hand to the printed outline, which gave the scene the look of a painting at a modest price. The record gives only a publication span of 1856 to 1907, so its exact date is uncertain.
