The Congdon name and the claim of refrigerated shipping set this label apart from the orchard scenes that fill much of its board. Crate labels like this were pasted onto wooden apple boxes so that buyers far from the orchard could recognize a grower's brand at a glance. Refrigerated rail cars, cooled with ice, let growers ship fruit over long distances to markets they could not otherwise reach, and the label sold that reliability as much as the fruit. Today these colorful lithographs are valued both as small works of commercial art and as records of how American growers marketed their crops.
