Thoreau's survey of Walden Pond is the detail that sets this plan apart. He measured the pond's shoreline and depths in 1846, while living in a cabin on its shore near Concord, Massachusetts, and this reduced plan shows that work at a smaller scale. The pond, about a mile and a half from the Concord village, was a small kettle lake carved by glacial ice, and Thoreau's careful sounding of its depths and outline became part of his book *Walden* (1854). Looking at the plan alongside the text shows how closely he tied his account of the place to measured fact.
