Sleighing in Harlem, a wood engraving dated 1873, shows a winter scene in what was then the northern edge of Manhattan, when Harlem was still a semi-rural district of farms, country roads and newly built streetcar suburbs. Horse-drawn sleighs gliding over snow were a favorite pastime for New Yorkers of the period, and engravings like this one fed the popular illustrated weeklies that brought city life to a national readership. The piece belongs to the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, and it is worth looking at for the way wood engraving captures texture in snow, harness and fur.
