Jessie Bartlett Davis, the contralto shown here, is pictured in the costume and pose of a stage performer, which fits the c1889 date on the record. She was a singer of light opera and concert music who performed with a Boston-based comic opera company known as the Bostonians, and that association is what the caption ties to this portrait. The studio credit to N. Sarony points to Napoleon Sarony, a New York photographer who made many theatrical portraits of performers in this period. Such cabinet-style studio portraits were widely sold and collected, so they served both as publicity and as keepsakes for fans.
