This 1899 color lithograph advertises The Bostonians, a light opera troupe that presented itself as "America's greatest light opera company." The poster was printed by the Courier Litho. Co. of Buffalo, New York, and names Barnabee and MacDonald as proprietors, with the tour managed by the New York producers Klaw & Erlanger. The company grew out of Boston's popular comic opera scene, and by the late 1890s its touring productions were a familiar part of American theater. The text promises an "opera comique" with a full cast, chorus, and orchestra, which shows how theatrical posters of the period sold their shows on scale and polish.
