Few images of Boston's pre-Revolution unrest show the crowd's violence as bluntly as this one, which depicts an exciseman, a customs officer, being tarred, feathered, and forced to drink tea. The scene draws on the 1770s quarrels over duties on imported goods, especially tea, and on the tarring and feathering that colonial crowds used against customs men and loyalists. Satirical prints like this one were often made in Britain and aimed at colonial resistance, so the image reflects a particular political view. The record gives no date, and the name Robinson on the shelflist card is unverified, so the print's exact origin and publisher remain uncertain.
