The title sets this picture apart from the other Boston Tea Party images on the board: instead of the harbor dumping, it shows a tax collector, the "excise-man," being tarred and feathered. The design comes from a British satirical print issued in London in 1774, when Parliament's Coercive Acts were turning the Massachusetts dispute into a full crisis. D. C. Johnston copied it onto stone for a Boston printing by Pendleton in 1830, so an American audience decades later saw a British caricature of colonial resistance. The reversal of viewpoint is worth noting, as the image records the violence of the Revolution's early years through hostile eyes.
