The subject is a horse belonging to a Captain Beckwith, according to an old caption card whose details the record marks as unverified. The picture is dated February 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, when mounts were essential to army life and a captain's horse was among his most valuable possessions. The caption card also lists African Americans among the subjects, so people of color may have appeared in the scene, perhaps as attendants or camp workers. That detail is worth noting when considering how wartime photographs recorded the people around the army. The print is a gelatin silver print made later than the date of the scene.
