A base hit" belongs to the Darktown comics, a series of racist caricatures that Currier & Ives issued in the early 1880s. The artist, Thomas Worth, was one of the firm's regular comic illustrators. The title plays on baseball, which was growing into a popular pastime in the 1880s, and the print uses exaggerated caricature to mock Black Americans at play. Today it is best read as evidence of the stereotyping of the period, when Black men were still playing professional baseball but were already being pushed out of the sport.
