Taken around 1924, when Thomas Edison was in his late seventies, this portrait shows the inventor in his later years, when he was still working in his laboratories and widely known as a national figure. The print carries a copyright line in the name of Walter Scott Shinn of New York, a reminder that portraits of famous men were often issued commercially and sold to the public. Edison's career spanned the phonograph, the practical electric light, and motion picture development, and he held more than 1,000 patents. The date and attribution come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
