The stone fort at El Caney, on the eastern edge of Santiago de Cuba, was one of the first Spanish positions to fall in the Spanish-American War. U.S. infantry attacked the village on July 1, 1898, as part of the wider assault on Santiago, and the Spanish garrison there held out for much of the morning before withdrawing. This stereograph, issued by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, around 1898, shows the damage the fighting left behind, a reminder of how quickly a fortified position could be reduced to rubble in a single engagement.
