A moonlit garden, a pair of lovers, and a winged Cupid hovering overhead give this Victorian chromolithograph its sentimental charge. Chromolithography, the multi-stone color printing process that flourished in the late 1800s, made richly colored images like this affordable for ordinary households, and cards and prints of this kind were often exchanged as tokens of affection. The Cupid motif draws on classical mythology, where the god of love was a familiar figure in Victorian art and greeting cards. Look closely at the soft gradations of blue and silver in the night sky, which the printers achieved by layering many separate inked stones.
