Doves and a kissing couple make this card a classic of the early twentieth-century Valentine's trade, when printed postcards carried sentiment across the mail for a cent or two. Hand coloring was still common on these cards before color printing became cheap, so the pinks, blues and gold touches were often applied by workers at the printer's table, sometimes in assembly-line fashion. The card belongs to the "Puppy Love" group, a loose label for sweet, lightly comic romantic images that suggested courtship without naming it. Look closely at the birds and the soft shading, which show how these makers relied on stock poses and decorative details to express affection cheaply and quickly.
