A hand-colored postcard, with a pair of newlyweds set inside a painted heart, is an unusual choice for a wedding image, since most studio portraits of the period kept to plain backdrops. The heart frame and the tinted cheeks, lips and clothing were added by hand over a printed photograph, a finishing method that was popular in the early twentieth century when postcards were a cheap and fashionable way to send sentiments. Such cards were often exchanged as keepsakes or mailed to announce a marriage, so the design doubles as a greeting. Look closely at the soft colors, which were applied with brushes and can vary slightly from one card to another.
