Advertising the ninth annual New England Fair, held at Lowell, Massachusetts, over four days in early September 1872, this color lithograph was printed in Boston by Charles H. Crosby & Co. and published by C. Frank King. Fairs of this kind drew farmers, manufacturers and city families to see livestock, produce, machinery and household goods, and the poster was meant to draw visitors to the grounds. Lowell, a mill city on the Merrimack River, was a fitting host in the years after the Civil War. Color lithography was an affordable way to make eye-catching posters in the 1870s, and this sheet shows how far commercial printing had advanced by then.
