A spiral gravity conveyor, a helical chute that lets barrels and boxes slide down under their own weight rather than being hauled by hand, is the subject of this glass negative. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial firm active in the early twentieth century, documented industrial equipment like this for its clients, and the negative dates from between 1910 and 1920. Streaks and blemishes across the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, and the negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
