A glass negative of James Ramsay MacDonald, the Scottish Labour leader, comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied portraits of public figures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. MacDonald became Britain's first Labour prime minister in January 1924, leading a minority government that lasted only until that fall, and he returned to the office in 1929. The record gives no date, and the name comes from the agency's own caption, which the Library of Congress has not independently verified. Viewers should treat the identification as the agency's attribution.
