Shown with his handlers rather than in the ring, this portrait of Luis Firpo offers a quieter view of a fighter better known for his fierce bouts. Firpo, nicknamed the "Wild Bull of the Pampas," came from Argentina to the United States and drew large crowds with his aggressive style. He is best remembered for his 1923 heavyweight title fight with Jack Dempsey, in which he knocked Dempsey through the ropes before losing. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, made glass negatives like this one, and the date on the record, 4/12/23, is unverified.
