The title on this glass negative is simply "Schipa," a surname the Bain News Service recorded on its negatives and caption cards, and the record notes that the identification has not been verified. If it refers to the Italian lyric tenor Tito Schipa, the picture would date from his years singing in American opera houses in the 1920s. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain, sent photographers to theaters, concert halls, and public events, and its negatives record a wide range of people and occasions. Because the card gives no date or caption, the sitter and setting are best treated as provisional.
