This glass negative carries the name of Maria Jeritza, the Moravian-born soprano who became one of the most celebrated singers at the Metropolitan Opera in New York after her debut there in 1921. She was especially admired in Puccini's *Tosca* and Richard Strauss's *Salome*, and her arrival in America drew wide press attention. The record gives no date, and the name comes from caption data that the Bain News Service recorded and that has not been independently verified. Bain's studio supplied newspapers with news and celebrity pictures in the early twentieth century, so the plate offers a glimpse of how stage stars were presented to the public in that era.
