The title, *The River Swarming with Craft*, describes a waterway crowded with vessels, and a lighthouse in such a scene marks the point where traffic had to be guided with care. Rivers and estuaries like this were once busy with ferries, fishing boats, barges and steamers, and lights and beacons helped pilots steer past sandbars and shifting channels, especially after dark. The lighthouse stands apart from that activity as a fixed reference point, and it is worth noticing how the boats and the tower together show how closely working waterways depended on navigation aids.
