Few places on the Atlantic coast are as exposed as Montauk Point, the eastern tip of Long Island, where the lighthouse marks the approach to Long Island Sound. Commissioned by George Washington and first lit in the late 1790s, the tower was already one of the country's older lights by 1871. This engraving appeared in *Harper's New Monthly Magazine* in September 1871, on page 481, reflecting the magazine's popular coverage of coastal landmarks for its readers.
