The REO Mountaineer named in this record was an automobile, and its title describes a round trip from New York to San Francisco and back. Ransom E. Olds founded the REO company in 1904, so the plate dates from the firm's earliest years, when long-distance runs were a common way for automakers to show that their cars could handle rough roads. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative, produced views of American travel and scenery, and its plates were later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
