The subject here is an automobile, the REO Mountaineer, shown as the car that made a round trip from New York to San Francisco and back, a feat that was still notable in the early years of motoring. The REO Motor Car Company was founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1904, after he left the company that bore his name, so the picture captures one of the firm's early vehicles. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1905, was better known for its commercial views of cities, resorts and landscapes, and its archive offers a useful record of how automobiles were presented to the public in that period. The note "Huber's Hotel" suggests the location was tied to the hotel, a common backdrop for early motoring photographs.
