Lake Mendota, one of the four lakes that ring the city of Madison, is the subject here, shown as a broad expanse of open water under a wide sky. The photograph was made around 1898 by the Detroit Photographic Company, a firm known for its hand-colored and tinted views of American scenery that it sold widely in the late 1890s. Madison's position between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona made it a favorite destination for summer resort visitors and, by then, a growing university town, and views like this one helped stir interest in the region's lakes. The print is a useful record of how the shoreline looked before much of it was built up.
