The Bank of Erie Block stands in Erie, a small town in southeastern Kansas, and this view is set on its commercial street, with utility poles running along the roadway. Such brick business blocks were the core of many Kansas towns in the late 1800s, housing banks, shops, and offices that served surrounding farms. The poles in the scene point to the spread of telegraph and electric lines into rural communities during these decades. The photograph was made by Mossman & Wagner, and it captures a moment when a town's commercial center was taking on a more modern, wired appearance.
