A young girl in a cape marked with a cross holds out a sheet of Christmas Seals to a driver, a small scene of the holiday fundraising that once reached people far from the sickroom. The seals were stickers sold in the weeks before Christmas, with the money going to tuberculosis care and education. The campaign began in the United States in 1907, and it relied on ordinary people, including children, to hand the seals out and ask for a donation. Pictures like this one show how the drive moved from church halls and post offices onto the street, where a passing motorist could be asked to buy a sheet.
