From the army post on Governor's Island, this c1911 view looks across New York Harbor toward the towers of Lower Manhattan. The island, sitting at the mouth of the Upper Bay, gave a clear line of sight to the financial district, where office buildings were then pushing the city's skyline higher than ever. The print was issued by Irving Underhill, a New York publisher whose views of the city were sold to visitors, so it reflects how the skyline was presented to the public at the time.
