The title, *Splitting the Party: The Entering Wedge*, names the idea at the center of this Currier & Ives lithograph, published in New York around 1872. John Cameron signed the image, and the firm's catalog raisonné records it as number 6066. The year was a difficult one for the Republican Party, as a faction of reformers broke away from President Ulysses S. Grant and nominated Horace Greeley for president. Prints like this one turned such quarrels into quick, readable pictures that a broad public could take in at a glance.
