Titled "Dressed for the party," this stereograph carries the number 163 and the name of its publisher, L.M. Melander. Its caption card records no date, but stereo cards of this kind were produced in large numbers from the 1860s into the early 1900s, when parlor stereoscopes were a common form of home entertainment. Pairs of nearly identical photographs, viewed through a lens, gave a sense of depth, and scenes like this one, with staged or costumed figures, were meant to amuse viewers and were often collected in numbered series.
