Winter turns Niagara Falls into a landscape of frozen spray, with ice building up along the gorge walls and clinging to the rocks and trees near the cataract. By the 1880s the falls drew steady crowds of tourists from both sides of the border, and winter views like this one showed visitors a side of the cataract that summer travelers rarely saw. Photographs of the falls were widely sold as souvenirs in that period. The ice formations are worth a close look, since they changed shape with each cold snap.
