*Spare Seife! ... aber wie?* ("Save soap! ... but how?") asks its German viewers to conserve soap, and its title reads like a question the poster only partly answers. Dated 1915, it reflects the home-front economy of wartime Germany, when the British naval blockade cut imports and fats needed for soap were diverted to food and to glycerin for explosives. The color lithograph was printed by Emil Saatz's firm in Berlin-Schöneberg and credited to the artist Bernhard. It comes from the Rehse Archive, a collection of posters documenting twentieth-century German political and social history.
