This picture is a copy of a photographic print showing Alexander Graham Bell's first telephone, captioned as a "Timely Topics" item in the Detroit News. The print came from Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for news and stereograph photography, and the Detroit Publishing Company later photographed it as a glass negative. Bell's 1876 patent and his first intelligible transmission to his assistant Thomas Watson made the instrument a landmark of the telephone's early history. The record's date range places the copy around the time the telephone was becoming a common household fixture.
