Titled "Maple sugar time" under a Detroit News "timely topics" heading, this view is a 5 x 7 inch glass negative copied from a print, so it preserves a seasonal feature rather than a scene photographed directly. Sugaring is the late-winter work of tapping maple trees, collecting sap as the spring thaw starts it running, and boiling it down into syrup and sugar. The method grew out of Indigenous practices and was taken up by settlers across the Great Lakes region. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of cities, farms and countryside in the early twentieth century, shows how such rural routines were presented to city readers.
